Things I’ve Put Inside

Inside my coffee, of course.

Oh I’ve put some weird things in there. A wad of butter, a banana, a handful of cinnamon sticks. We’re still talking about coffee, right?

I keep my daily cold brew simple. I pour from the cold brew tap in our apartment over moderately-sized ice cubes. Drop in a light splash of A2/A2 whole milk. Stir with a glass straw (I know these are becoming taboo now). And enjoy.

Overall, I let the cold brew talk. The milk is in there to add a bit of creaminess, and I like how it looks like a lava lamp when I pour it in. But as mentioned, this is my daily coffee. I want to get weird sometimes. I want to bring the High Frequency Coffee drinkers some new recipes and fun flavor mixes.

Side note: Is there a better name of High Frequency Coffee drinkers? High Frequenters? HFCers? Freqs (pronounced ‘freaks’)? All ideas are welcomed.

Here are some things I’ve tried in my coffee and my unobjective, fully-factual opinion on them.

  • Whole milk: The usual. Nothing better. If your stomach can handle dairy, keep with whole milk. If your stomach can’t handle dairy, grow up. (jk please take care of your gut 😊)

  • Skim milk: Absolutely not. Never. It’s basically just water. You’re watering down your coffee. Adding zero taste and damaging the texture.

  • Alternative milks: How much time do we have here?

    • Oat: Either tastes like shit or has a million other artificial ingredients in it? Wtf is “grapeseed oil” and “sorghum” and why are they being added to my milk? I do like the flavor depth it can add.

    • Almond: Too watery. Next!

    • Soy: This only exists in 2000s diet trends.

    • Macadamia: This barely exists.

    • Pistachio: I wish it were green.

    • ***These milks are all acceptable if they are homemade. And if you do make it at home, I commend your effort and we should be friends.

  • Butter: Gross texture. Felt like it moved through my body very quickly. Unintended consequences. Stick to butter on bread.

  • Cold Foam: Cold brew’s best friend. A flavored cream top?!? AAUUGGHHHHHH

  • Olive Oil: Stop. Full stop. Doesn’t help with anything. Why are we doing this?

  • Cayenne: I don’t mind this one. Reminds me of Mexican chocolate. Intelligentsia does this well with their Avena Latte.

  • Turmeric: I haven’t mixed with coffee yet, but I do love me some golden lattes.

  • Gulab Jamun leftover syrup: Too sweet. Too many fried dough chunks in my coffee. Immediately dumped in the garbage. Unrelated, but gulab jamun is one of my favorite desserts.

  • CBD Oil: I think CBD doesn’t work in general. But to each their own. May have some fun consequences?

  • Tahini: This plays! Nuttiness, creaminess, deliciousness. Plays really well inside of a cold foam too.

  • Eggs: I’ve never done this, but I don’t mind egg whites whipped into a cocktail. So maybe? I’d want someone else to try it first.

  • Licor 43: Can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning.

  • Kefir: Gross, don’t do it. Too sour and tangy. Can’t even taste the coffee anymore.

  • Protein Powder: Now this is a common trend. I don’t hate it because I’m a protein fiend (steak for breakfast, anyone?). I understand trying to sneak in gains wherever I can find them. But my morning coffee is a sacred ritual. I’m not messing with it for the sake of gains. Protein in the second coffee of the day? I don’t hate it.

  • Lemonade: An Arnold Palmer is just flat-out better. If it ain’t broke…

I think I’ve covered enough here.

I’m always looking for new recipes and add-ins for cold brew coffee cart catering events. I like getting seasonal. I like getting creative. I like getting weird. If anyone has any suggestions, nothing is too crazy, so please let me know.
